To understand just how this treatment works exactly, you need to familiarize yourself with what a fascia is and how they work.
Fascia is a thin layer of connective muscle tissue that is found surrounding every organ in the body. When somebody gets injured, the fascia tissue around the muscle will tighten up, causing pain in the surrounding area. Self myofascial release for neck pain has sometimes been called foam rolling because this massage therapy technique can be performed at home, by you alone, using foam rollers. You will need to have the proper equipment before you start performing self myofascial release for neck pain. The only thing you need is a foam roller. Make sure to choose carefully because not just any foam roller will suffice. The density of the roller is the key to it working properly. If the roller is too soft, there will not be enough pressure applied to your neck. If the roller is too hard, it could cause your muscles to bruise easily in addition to other pains.
After you find a good foam roller that is not too soft and not too hard, now you can start self myofascial release for neck pain. To do this treatment on your own, you will start by lying down on your back. The foam roller will be placed under your neck. You can either keep your head up or let it relax. In order help increase the pressure that the roller is putting on your neck, lift your hips up off the ground until they have no support under them. Roll your neck into position on the roller. You will need to stay in this position for about 1 or 2 minutes for it to be effective.
